The elderly may not be known as the ‘digital generation’, but a surprising number of them are keen iPad, tablet and smartphone users. There is now a multitude of apps available that are proving extremely useful to our elderly clients and enable them to maintain a certain level of independence.
Pill Reminder Pro
Available for both iOS and Android. You enter the name of the pill, how many to take and when, the app will remind you to take the right pills at the right time with a message.
Clock Face Test
This app for iOS and iPad is free. It is a cognitive test to evaluate for dementia. Users are asked to drag numbers to the appropriate place on the clock and the app assesses their performance.
Fall Detector Apps
There are a number of apps available for both iOS and Android that can provide this very important service. Spantec’s Fall Detector is a specialised application to alert for falls and extended periods of inactivity. There is also Fade on Google Play and FallSafety Pro.
Mobility Assessment Tool
This low-cost app for the iPhone offers an elderly person a form of mobility self-assessment. A series of tests allows the user to assess their own perceptions of just how mobile they are. Very useful if a person is inclined to over estimate their capabilities.
This app comes from Care UK and it is an easy to use guide to the physiotherapy exercises you need to do to prepare for, and recover from, hip or knee replacement surgery as well as foot and hand surgery.
Making communication easier for an elderly person can be a real life-saver. The free Dragon Dictation app lets the person dictate text and then send it as an email message. They can also dictate reminders to themselves and create posts on social media, which can help them feel more connected to the world.
Only available for iPhones, iPads and iPods. Digifit iCardio is an ideal medical alert system to keep seniors hearty, healthy, fit and happy. For tracking the health and fitness of senior citizens, this app is second to none and it connects with FitBIt devices and MyFitnessPal. It also has wireless connectivity and built in pedometer plus map routes for walks.
Get in Touch
There are of course many more apps available and they are developing new ones on a regular basis. At Care For Me, we always try to keep abreast of what is new and evaluate them for use by our clients.
